1. DR. JAMES MONTGOMERY BOICE: A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE
As some of you know, it has been my privilege for a few years
now to be teaching computer science part-time at City Center
Academy, an urban, multi-racial, Christian high school located
in Philadelphia, PA. CCA is a ministry of Tenth Presbyterian
Church (PCA), whose senior pastor for over 30 years has been
Dr. James Montgomery Boice. While teaching at CCA, I have
much appreciated getting to know his wife, Linda Boice, who
has taught at the school since its inception.
My own congregation, Pilgrim Church (OPC), has over the years
benefited much from various ministries associated with Dr.
Boice and "Tenth," including the Philadelphia Conference on
Reformed Theology as well as Dr. Boice's preaching (at the
church and on the Bible Study Hour) and writing (such as his
devotional expositional commentaries on Genesis, John, and
Romans, or his 740-page theology book for laymen entitled
Foundations of the Christian Faith).
As you may have heard, Dr. Boice passed on to glory this past
week, on Thursday, June 15, 2000. He will be much missed.
If you are unfamiliar with Dr. Boice, here's some biographical
information, taken from Tenth's Web site:
"Eight weeks after learning he had a fatal form of liver
cancer, the Reverend Dr. James Montgomery Boice, 61, Senior
Minister of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, died
in his sleep on Thursday, June 15, 2000. A world-famous
Bible teacher and statesman for Reformation theology, Boice
had received his doctor’s diagnosis on Good Friday, two hours
before stepping into the pulpit to deliver a sermon on the
crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On May 7 he informed his
congregation of his condition, asking them at one point,
'If God does something in your life, would you change it?
If you’d change it, you’d make it worse. It wouldn’t be as
good.'
"Dr. Boice was pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church since
1968; during his 32 years it became a model for ministry in
America’s cities and the regular attendance grew from 350 to
1,200. Since 1969 he was the teacher on The Bible Study Hour
radio broadcast over 238 stations, and was President of the
program’s parent organization, the Alliance of Confessing
Evangelicals.
"Dr. Boice served as Chairman of the International Council
on Biblical Inerrancy from its founding in 1977 until the
completion of its work in 1988. At the time of his death he
...was Chairman of the Board of City Center Academy, a college
preparatory high school for inner-city youth founded seventeen
years ago by Dr. Boice and his wife.
"A prolific author, Dr. Boice wrote or contributed to over
sixty books on the Bible and theology. Dr. Boice held degrees
from Harvard University (A.B.), Princeton Theological Seminary
(B.D.), the University of Basel, Switzerland (D. Theol.)....
"A memorial service will be held at Tenth Presbyterian Church
in Philadelphia at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 23, the Reverend
Eric Alexander of St. Andrews, Scotland, preaching. In lieu
of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Alliance of
Confessing Evangelicals, 1716 Spruce Street, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, 19103, or to City Center Academy, 1701 Delancey
Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19103."

2. HOW TO AVOID JUNK MAIL AND SPAM
Just as you may get unwanted junk mail and spam (unsolicited
advertisements sent out by bulk mail) delivered to your home
mailbox by the U.S. Postal Service, likewise similar unwanted
mail (or worse!) may be delivered to you over the Internet.
But there are ways to reduce or eliminate junk mail and spam
(including "get rich quick" offers and invitations to visit
pornographic sites). Following is an excellent collection of
useful tips, put together by Lee Seats of About.com:
"Here's How [to Avoid Junk Email]:
1. Only provide your email address to sites that have an
  appropriate privacy policy.
2. Use a free (and disposable) email address when you suspect
you may get on email lists that don't interest you....
3. Most online forms provide a checkbox to select whether
you want to receive email from them. Check or uncheck as
  appropriate
4. Many online forms have a checkbox which asks permission to
share your information with third parties. Check or uncheck
  as appropriate.
5. Avoid entering your email address in online guest books or
other places where it will be displayed on the Web. Spammers
use programs called bots to harvest these.
6. Never reply to unsolicited email even to request removal.
It just verifies that your address is valid.
7. Use a bulk email blocking service...."
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/library/howto/htavoid.htm?rnk=r1&;terms=freebies+Junk
We hope to go into more detail on some of these tips in future
issues of CATI, but for now let us consider Lee's second tip,
"Use a free (and disposable) email address when you suspect
you may get on email lists that don't interest you....":
"Become a Moving Target. - This is probably the one most
effective method of warding off the spammers. If you don't
give out your primary email address except to trusted
individuals and organizations you can keep a nice clean
mailbox. Refer to my Free Email Links for some places you
can sign up for a free (and disposable) email address. Use
this address when you think you may be exposed to a junk
emailer. When you do start getting too much spam to that
account just cancel it and get another. You should also
use a disposable account if you post messages to the
Internet news groups. Spammers often use software that
combs newsgroups for email addresses."
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/library/weekly/aa060297.htm
And here's where you'll find Lee's List of "Free Email Links,"
just mentioned:
About.com: Shopping: Freebies: Free Email Accounts
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/msub25.htm
Those suggestions should help you reduce the problem of junk
mail and spam on the Internet.
