1. FREE INTERNET ACCESS: EVEN WITHOUT ANNOYING BANNER ADS?
Not everyone will prefer free Internet access:
PC World: "Free ISPs Will Boom..."
  http://www.pcworld.com/pcwtoday/article/0,1510,14173,00.html
Douglas Gray's article continues, "But most of us will still
pay for access to ensure quality...," since often "we care
more about performance and reliability than cost...."
Before signing up with any free Internet Service Provider, be
sure to read this warning from Liz Logan at TIME magazine:
TIME digital: Trying the Free ISPs
  http://www.time.com/time/digital/daily/0,2822,39394,00.html
I know, her experiences with eleven free ISPs may or may not
be typical, but they do suggest exercising caution before you
move in that direction.
If you do want to cut the cost of accessing the Internet, Lee
Seats at About.com has information for you:
"You can stop paying those monthly bills and enjoy your
Internet access for free. The only price you pay is to
tolerate an ad banner on your desktop and to provide
marketing information."
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/msub29wb.htm
On that same page, you'll find a list of free ISPs, all of
which put a banner ad on your desktop display:
About.com: Shopping: Freebies: Free Internet Access Services
    - Ad Banner Supported
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/msub29wb.htm
Here are seven of the free ISPs suggested:
AltaVista Free Internet Access
  http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/altavista/
As the name indicates, this free ISP service is related to
AltaVista, one of the best search engines on the Web. The
service offers "Free, unlimited 56k modem internet access
...all across the United States and Canada."
BlueLight.com
  http://www.bluelight.com/freeinternet/
Although the name "BlueLight" may be unfamiliar to you, this
service is provided by Kmart and associated with Yahoo! The
service claims the "Largest coverage in the U.S. (96% of
nation has local access)."
freeinternet.com
  http://www.freeinternet.com/url.php?url=software.php
Freei claims to be "the leading free and anonymous Internet
service provider in the nation." It offers "coverage in all
50 states" (but not necessarily all cities in those states).
FreeLane
  http://freelane.excite.com/
The name "FreeLane" may be unfamiliar to you, but this site
is related to Excite, another popular Web portal (although
not as popular as Yahoo!). "FreeLane is available in most
areas in the U.S. and Canada," although access numbers in
"NY, MA, CT, NJ, OH, and MI are limited" at this time.
iFreedom
  http://www.ifreedom.com/
Available in "2800 cities in USA & Canada," this ISP puts up
a new banner ad every 20 minutes.
Lycos Free Internet Access
  http://free.lycos.com/
According to About.com, "This is essentially the same as
AltaVista's access since it is also run my 1stUp.com." Lycos
says that "Lycos Free Internet Access is available in the
continental U.S. Lycos" (as well as Germany and Malaysia),
but - contrary to About.com's description - Lycos does not
appear to mention access from Canada. Lycos, by the way,
is another popular Web portal.
NetZero
  http://www.netzero.com/
NetZero offers free access from certain locations in the U.S.
You may, however, dislike having a banner ad on your desktop.
If so, Lee Seats also has good news for you. Here's where
you'll find the relevant Web page:
About.com: Shopping: Freebies: Free Internet Access - No
    Annoying Ad Window
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/library/weekly/aa050700a.htm
And here's news from that page in which you may be interested:
"Avoiding free Internet access providers because you didn't
want the hassle of those annoying ad banners obstructing your
view? There are a few free access providers that don't use
a desktop ad banner.... These services set your homepage to
their site, and provide advertising or shopping opportunities
which they hope you will use.... Among the banner-free
providers are 1Nation Online, FreeWWWeb and Worldspy.... The
banner-free services provide as much as, and in some cases
more than, the big name banner supported services. This is
pretty amazing."
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/library/weekly/aa050700a.htm
Here's where you'll find a list of no-banner-ad free ISPs
suggested by Lee Seats at About.com:
About.com: Shopping: Freebies: Free Internet Access Without
    Desktop Ad Banners
  http://freebies.about.com/shopping/freebies/msub29nb.htm
And here are four places where you can get free Internet
access without annoying banner ads:
1NationOnline.com
  http://www.1nol.com/
Information on their Web site seems a bit sparse, but they
apparently offer free access not only in the U.S. but also in
certain areas of Central and South America as well.
FreeWWWeb Canada
  http://www.freewwwebcanada.com/fwc/index.html
FreeWWWeb USA
  http://freewwwebusa.com/
"Local dial up access is available in over 1000 cities across
the United States" as well in areas of Canada.
WorldShare
  http://www.worldshare.com/new/index.htm
Claims to be the "#1 Rated Free ISP as rated at Epinions.com,"
but you do have to "agree to take one short online survey each
month in exchange for your FREE Internet access...."
WorldSpy
  http://www.worldspy.com/freeisp/isp.asp
According to Business Week Online in January 2000, "If you
must have a free service, this is the one we recommend."
Finally, here are some places where you can find more about
free ISPs (including some customer reviews):
DAwn McGatney's The Lowdown on the Free ISPs: What Folks Are
Telling Us and What You Can Expect
  http://dogwolf.seagull.net/freeisp.html
FreeCenter.com: Free ISPs
  http://www.freecenter.com/dialup.html
Epinions: Computers & Internet: Software: Internet Service
    Providers: Free National
  http://epinions.lycos.com/cmsw-ISP-All-Free_National?vid=solp
(Caution: the "Highly recommended" in the right column in the
lists of reviews refers to the review or reviewer, not to the
ISP reviewed!)
IMPORTANT: I have had no personal experience with any of the
free ISPs, so read the reviews before you try one. If you've
had experience (good or bad) with any, feel free to send your
comments to me at cati@traver.org . An alternative to explore
for free Internet access (even without annoying banner ads) is
your own local public library....
