1. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: REINSTALLING, REINSTALLING,....
Well, overall the delay of his issue is related either to Mrs.
Murphy's chowder or Mr. Murphy's Law. For reasons unknown
(to me, but not to God) my computer decided all of a sudden
to make a dozen or so .DLL files (plus other needed files)
disappear (into the soup?)!
I'm not sure why, because I "religiously" update Norton and
use Ad-Aware, SpyBot Search and Destroy, etc., so I should
have had adequate protection against any viruses, worms, or
Trojan horses. And I ran some software to test out my hard
drive, but there was no indication that it was preparing to
die on me. So, for now, we'll have to blame it on gremlins.
Even if you have decent backups (which I did), this can mean
a lot of work. After I reformatted my hard drive and after
I reinstalled Windows XP from scratch, I have been very busy
reinstalling hardware, reinstalling software, reinstalling
updates, reinstalling data, etc. I'm still not finished, for
I'll go to use a program and then realize that I haven't yet
reinstalled it.
So I've made an investment which should make things easier
next time (and my guess is that there will be a next time).
I've added a one touch 120-gig Maxtor drive which at the
touch of a button will back up my main C:\ 120-gig hard
drive. We live in a fallen universe with the good old law
of entrophy emphasizing that this side of eternity things
wear out and break (Romans 8:20-25 indicates that when Adam
fell, the creation fell also).
But the glorious message of the gospel is that sometimes
broken things can get fixed. That's true of people, and
it is true of computer systems also. So I'm working on
my computer, and proof of progress is this new issue of
"CATI." I hope you enjoy it and find it useful.

2. TRINITY HYMNAL: ALPHABETICAL INDEX BY FIRST LINE & REFRAIN
In the March 1963 issue of Moody Monthly, there was by Wilbur
M. Smith, at that time a professor at Fuller Theological
Seminary, a "Review of a Notable New Hymnal." The hymnal
was the Trinity Hymnal, published in 1981 by the Orthodox
Presbyterian Church.
Here are some of his comments: "...I must say that in the
hours spent studying these hymns my whole being seemed to
throb anew with joyful praise to God for His glory, power
and love, and for the full redemption which by grace alone
is offered to us through Jesus Christ His Son. The entire
selection exalts the revelation of truth as it is found in
the Holy Scriptures."
He also says, "Frankly, if I were a pastor of a church today,
I would certainly propose at once the exclusive use of this
church hymnal...." Except for those who believe that only
Psalms may be sung in formal worship services, the Trinity
Hymnal (the older edition or a more contemporary edition
released in 1990) is widely used today in many Presbyterian
and Reformed churches, as well as a significant number of
(Reformed) Baptist congregations.
You'll find many resources relating to the Trinity Hymnal on
the Web site of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church at this
location:
http://opc.org/books/TH/
These resources include a searchable concordance of the old
Trinity Hymnal, as well as "complete Trinity Hymnal lyrics
[HTML and PDF], an alphabetical list of tunes, with links, a
numerical list of hymns, with links, an index of first lines
of refrains, links to all MIDI files, ... all the MIDI files
... in [self-extracting] .exe ... or .sit ... format, [and]
a Readme file for [the] MIDI files," plus more!
Note well: included are MIDI files for all of the 730 hymns
in the old Trinity Hymnal! The MIDI files were prepared by
Bill Bacon, Elder of Westminster OPC in Hamden, Connecticut.
The MIDI filenames are keyed to the hymn numbers in the old
Trinity Hymnal, but I have good news for those who use some
other hymnal.
If you use instead of the old Trinity hymnal the new Trinity
hymnal or some other hymnal, a very useful new resource is on
the way! In fact, CATI readers get to beta-test it before it
is placed on the OPC Web site. It's an alphabetical-by-first-
line index with links directly to the corresponding hymn (the
words and the music) on the OPC Web site.
If you find any errors in the following list, please send them
to me. The e-mail address to use is cati@traver.org. This
issue of CATI is for the letters A - M. (Hopefully, the next
issue will be for the letters N - Z.) Your feedback will help
me prepare a perfected copy for the OPC Web site.
With most e-mail programs, you can simply click (or perhaps
double-click) on the links below to be taken to the related
hymn on the OPC Web site. If that is not true of your Web
browser, go on-line and go to the following Web address:

3. DON'T KILL THAT TEDDY BEAR!: THE JDBGMGR.EXE VIRUS HOAX
Many (most?) virus warnings are hoaxes or worse. A recent
example is the message that claims to be from Microsoft and
contains a "imnportant security patch" which (supposedly)
must be installed at once to protect your computer from a
deadly virus. Unfortunately, the message is not really
from Microsoft (who never distributes security patches in
this way), and the "security patch" IS the deadly virus!
Here is a virus warning currently being circulated via
e-mail:
______________________________________________________________
/
Subject: Fw: VIRUS.
Hi Everyone,
I just got this message from one of my friends. Sure enough my
address book was infected, which means yours will be also.
The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or
McAfee anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days
before damaging the system. It's sent automatically by the
messenger and by the Address Book, whether or not you sent
e-mails to your contacts. I have checked, found it, and
deleted it.
Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it:
DO THIS:
1. Go to Start, Find, or Search Option.
2. In the file/folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe
3. Be sure you search your C-Drive
4. Click "find now"
5. The virus has a Teddy Bear Icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe
DO NOT OPEN IT !!!!
6. RIGHT CLICK AND DELETE IT. IT WILL GO TO THE RECYCLE BIN.
7. Go to recycle bin and delete it there as well.
IMPORTANT ! ! !
If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your
address book so they can eradicate it in their own address
books.

Now, like any file, jbdgmgr.exe could become infected, so
watch out if someone sends you a copy via e-mail, but if you
find one already on your system, it's almost certainly all
right. If you have Windows, it belongs there, because it is
a component of Windows. It's not an especially important
file, but there's no reason to delete it. In short, don't
kill the teddy bear!
Teddy bears are cute, especially if they are koalas: see
the conclusion to "The Misunderstood Adolescent Writer" by
John Traver at http://www.merlynspen.com/john_traver.html.
(Koalas aren't really bears, by the way, but that's another
topic for another time.) In general, they ought not to be
killed, and that is true of the jbdgmgr.exe file with the
teddy bear icon beside it.
Beware of Geeks bearing gifts in e-mails, but don't erase
files from your computer unless you are sure that there is
a good reason to do so. Use Google at http://www.google.com
to check out whether or not it's a hoax (and, as I said,
most virus warnings are).
When I did a Google search on the topic, here are some of
the things that turned up:

4. MY NAPARC-PLUS CHURCH DIRECTORY: BRITISH COLUMBIA
NAPARC stands for "North American Presbyterian and Reformed
Council." Following is the basis of the Council:
"Confessing Jesus Christ as only Savior and Sovereign Lord
over all of life, we affirm the basis of the fellowship of
Presbyterian and Reformed Churches to be full commitment to
the Bible in its entirety as the Word of God written, without
error in all its parts and to its teaching as set forth in
the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession, the Canons
of Dordt, the Westminster Confession of Faith, and the
Westminster Larger and Shorter Catechisms...."
http://naparc.org/
Here are the member denominations:
Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church
Korean-American Presbyterian Church
Orthodox Presbyterian Church
Presbyterian Church in America
Reformed Church in the U.S.
Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America
I'm in the process of putting together a directory of churches
in conservative Reformed denominations (primarily those in
NAPARC) that have Web pages. In addition to the NAPARC
denominations, I also intend to include in my own directory
congregations that have Web pages and belong to the United
Reformed Churches in North America, a denomination which holds
similar convictions.
Note: Since "CATI" is a newsletter devoted to "Christians And
The Internet," this list includes only those congregations
that have a Web site. See the denominational Web sites for
a more complete listing:

Korean-American Presbyterian Church

Orthodox Presbyterian Church

Reformed Church in the U.S.

Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America

United Reformed Churches in North America
http://www.covenant-urc.org/urcna/directory.asp
Unlike the previous listing published in "CATI" in 2000, this
one will be geographically based, and arranged alphabetically
by state or province. We continue with British Columbia:
BRITISH COLUMBIA:
Vancouver:
Grace Vancouver (PCA)
Pastor: John P. F. Smed

IMPORTANT: Such a project is prone to error, so if you
notice any additions or corrections that ought to be made
to this list, please pass them along to cati@traver.org .
I apologize in advance for any errors or omissions.
Additions and corrections as needed will be published in
future issues of "CATI." Thank you for your assistance!

5. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: INFORMATION ON CATI NEWSLETTER
Like to know what this is? This is the eighty-fifth issue
of a free newsletter devoted to "Christians And The Internet"
("CATI," pronounced "Katy," but spelled with a "C" and an "I"
for "Christians" and the "Internet").
Like to subscribe to this free email newsletter? Just send an
email to subscribe@cati.org (but be sure to include your name
in the note).
Like to read past CATI issues and articles (or even search
CATI for a particular subject)? Go to http://cati.org and
you'll find an archive of past issues (arranged in reverse
chronological order), a partial (but rather dated) index of
articles (arranged alphabetically by topic), and a search
engine specifically for use with CATI.
Like to pass along this issue to others? You may. Permission
is hereby granted to pass along any issue of CATI to someone
else, provided that it is passed along in its entirety with no
changes made. (For now, I prefer that you send the complete
issue, although I may in the near future provide guidelines
for passing along individual articles.)
Like to use material from this newsletter (say, on a Web page
or in a publication)? For permission to do that, send a note
to cati@traver.org (explaining what you'd like to use and for
what purpose). Reasonable requests are usually granted.
Like to unsubscribe? That's also easy. Just send an email to
unsubscribe@cati.org (but if you decide to unsubscribe, you'll
be missed, so any thoughts about the newsletter that you would
be willing to share at that time would be much appreciated).
Like to tell your friends about CATI? That is not only much
encouraged, but also an encouragement to the editor! CATI is
a lot of work (albeit a labor of love) and (since it is a free
newsletter and I intend it to stay such) provides no financial
income, so what keeps me going with this personal endeavor is
knowing that people are finding it to be helpful, instructive,
and enjoyable. (Comments from readers are always welcome, so
let me hear from you!)
